What is Beast of Reincarnation?

Beast of Reincarnation is an action RPG by Game Freak — the studio behind Pokémon — published by Fictions, Inc. and built in Unreal Engine 5. It is the studio's first AAA title and a hard tonal break from its past work: a demanding, technical souls-like set in a ruined Japan in the year 4026, where a parasitic corruption called the Blight has consumed the world.

You play Emma, an eighteen-year-old Sealer — an outcast marked by the very Blight she hunts — traveling with Koo, a white dog who is himself a Blighted creature. Together they journey east to west, from the countryside toward the Capital, sealing the colossal Nushi that rule each region and absorbing their powers, with one goal at the end of the road: the Beast of Reincarnation itself, source of all corruption.

Combat blends Emma's fast katana action — parry-centric, in the cadence of Sekiro — with a command menu for Koo that slows time while you pick his skills, like a turn-based RPG bleeding into real time. Successful parries earn the points that fuel Koo's abilities, so defense literally powers your offense.

One rule of this world: "Never look up at the sky." The devs have said an ancient legend warns that something floats up there. We intend to find out what — and document it here.

Combat: your parries feed the dog

Four weeks in, the shipped game confirms what the previews promised: everything centers on one loop. Emma fights in real time with a katana, and deflecting an enemy attack at the right moment is the core skill the whole game tests. Each clean parry generates the resource that pays for Koo's abilities, which you select from a command menu that slows the action to a crawl while you decide. Read the enemy, deflect, spend the reward on your dog, repeat.

Koo's toolkit in the live game reaches well beyond bite attacks: Bloom Arts that break guard, bind enemies in roots, and buff Emma mid-combo, unlocked boss by boss as Nushi Skills (Sakura Storm from Rangifer, Dokuzeri Shower from Lacerta, and so on — the full reward map is on the boss page). Critics broadly agreed the combat is the game's best asset — it is the world and pacing that drew the “Mixed” scores; our review breaks that split down. The game ships with three difficulty settings, so the Sekiro comparison does not mean there is only one way to experience it.

The world: Blight, Nushi, and the road west

The journey runs east to west across a Japan reclaimed by nature and corruption. Each region is dominated by a Nushi — a colossal Blighted ruler — and sealing one is never just a boss trophy: Emma absorbs part of its power, expanding her movement and combat options for the regions ahead. That structure makes the Nushi order effectively the game's progression spine, which is why our boss hub and walkthrough are built around it.

Between the sealing fights there is a slower rhythm layered underneath the action: exploration off the main route, crafting and cooking, crop cultivation fed by seedlings, and — confirmed by everyone who has played it — the ability to pet Koo. Achievement data says players use it: “Man's Best Friend” sits at a 63.7% global unlock rate, higher than the second boss.

Builds and progression

Game Freak has confirmed three distinct playstyles, and progression rests on three pillars: skill trees, equipment, and Spirit Stones. The live game resolves this into three attributes (Strength, Vitality, Florescence) feeding two skill trees — the builds page maps what is confirmed.

PlaystyleWhat is confirmed so far
RangedFight from distance and let Koo's projectile arts carry damage while Emma controls space.
StealthApproach unseen and thin out camps before a fight starts; suited to players who hate being swarmed.
AggressiveStay in melee range, deflect everything, and convert perfect parries into constant Koo pressure.

Game Pass, editions, and pre-order bonuses

The buying decision splits cleanly by platform. On Xbox and PC, Beast of Reincarnation is a day-one Game Pass Ultimate title with Play Anywhere support, meaning one license covers console and PC with shared saves and achievements — the cheapest way to try it. On PS5 there is no subscription route, so it is a $59.99 purchase.

Pre-ordering any edition adds a brown Shiba Inu skin for Koo plus 30,000 Amber (the in-game currency). The Digital Deluxe Edition stacks on top of that: black and brown Shiba skins for Koo, the Oni Hat for Emma, the sword Big Dipper, 100,000 Amber, and a set of crop seedlings. One quirk worth knowing for importers: the Japanese PS5 physical release from Happinet permanently includes a DLC code matching the Deluxe content inside every copy — not just first print runs. Japanese retailers also offer store-specific extras such as canvas boards and acrylic stands. Full breakdown on our editions page.

Quick answers

Is it good? Divisive but liked: Metacritic 72 from 63 critics, Steam “Mixed” at 65% positive. Near-universal praise for the parry-and-Koo combat; the criticism lands on pacing, repeated environments and launch performance — and the performance half has been patched three times since. Full picture on the review page.

Is Beast of Reincarnation on Game Pass? Yes — day one on Game Pass Ultimate, playable on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and cloud. It is not part of any PlayStation subscription.

Is there a demo? No. Four weeks after launch there is still no demo on any platform. Game Pass remains the closest thing to a low-risk trial.

Is it open world? No — the shipped game is stage-based: 13 chapters plus an epilogue across five areas of Blighted Japan, region by region from east to west. Details on the open world page.

How hard is it? Deflect-focused in the Sekiro mold, with three difficulty settings. Steam's global data gives a live read: 53% of players have beaten the first boss, and about 24% have finished the story.

Who made it? Game Freak develops, Fictions, Inc. publishes, and it runs on Unreal Engine 5 — the studio's first original AAA project outside Pokémon.

How this site works

This is an independent guide site, not affiliated with Game Freak or Fictions. Every guide cites its sources: official store pages and announcements first, then platform data (Steam achievement statistics, patch notes), then established editorial guides — each labeled where it appears. Numbers we could not verify are marked as unverified rather than guessed. Pages are revised as patches land; each shows its own last-updated date.
